What a cool area this is! The road to get there is a bit rutted, we saw sedans make it so technically any car can get there, but just something to note. The trailhead is easy to miss, no parking lot for it, just road parking. Once you start the trail, you're walking on pumice and surrounded by short lodgepole pine (I believe.) Then you head into more dense fir forest and the trees there are gorgeous! There's a tiny patch of snow here and there, but they'll be melted out soon.
We went all the way to the end of the second marsh and took the binoculars out to try and see if there was any wildlife out there. We saw birds, fish jumping and salamanders. We saw a beaver dam and lots of evidence of beavers. Such a cool view of Helens as well! Lots of biting flies flying around, but we were never bit. I imagine the mosquitoes get bad in the summer!
