Snowfield Peak, Pyramid Lake — Friday, May. 31, 2024

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

Went for an overnight trip with Snowfield peak as our objective. The trail to Pyramid lake is in great shape! The rest of it, not so much. The climbers trail is a steep bushwhack and hard to navigate, it splits off and rejoins, there are class 3 moves on wet rock with wet roots and mud. It was very useful to have an up-to-date GPX track. There is still plenty of snow to post hole, slide down and climb up starting at around 5000'.

We kept making up names for trail features to keep our mind off the struggle: "weeping wall", "twin butt falls", "cliffy cliff", "death slide boulder", "the ice wall of doom"... you get the point..

We ended up at the arm of Pyramid peak roughly at 5500' and .25mi from the first climber's camp. The snow was nicely flattened by a couple of guys who hiked out a day before so we camped there. We left the next day as heavy rain started at 5am.

There is currently a large avalanche chute crossing the path to Colonial glacier right under Pyramid peak, the peak is loaded with wet snow so there will likely be more avalanche activity in next few days.

Overall a great day out in the wilderness, the views on Pyramid arm were incredible and we feel quite satisfied even though we didn't summit anything but "Fudgery hill"
