Trip Report

Hannegan Pass and Peak — Friday, May. 31, 2024

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Clyde digs it

Road has a lot of potholes, especially in the first mile.
Trail is mostly snow free for approximately 3 miles, then has intermittent snow until the camp at Mike 3.75. It was all firm and easy to cross today but snow bridges are starting to form in a couple of spots between mile 3 and the camp. Also a lot of random avalanche debris mixed in. The trail is snow covered beyond the camp. The camp is snow covered (3 plus feet). There is running water at the camp and at regular intervals along the trail. I turned around at the camp but some skiers coming down from Ruth said they were able to skin up from there. There were multiple new avalanches visible up high and they said they had started 2 good size ones before turning around.
There are some trees down, all but one are easy for a hiker to step over or around. One required some clambering. Not really difficult for a day hiker, but could be challenging with a large pack or for someone with limited mobility.
Many flowers, mostly violets and bleeding heart, but a wide variety of others including a few patches of avalanche lilies.
6 vehicles at the trailhead including mine.
