Enjoying the longer days, we set out at about 3pm intending toward going toward Bandera, and knowing we'd likely need to turn back once we hit snow.
There was intermittent snow on the trail beginning shortly before the Bandera/Mason Lake junction. Knowing the trail to Bandera was about to get steep and suspecting we'd hit snow sooner rather than later, we opted to go up toward Mason Lake.
Ended up turning around at the high point above the lake. Looking down the trail, it was snow covered and icy heading down into trees. We didn't want to put spikes on and turned around.
The snow patches we crossed were passable without spikes, but only because it was late in the day and things were slushy. I would have put them on if the snow was firmer, so bring them! Still feeling like early spring up there.
