We continued our exploration of this trail via bike that we’d begun last summer. We biked from Wilber Trailhead around mile 33.5 to the end of the trail at Higgins Point in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The trail is paved throughout with many pullouts, benches, informative signs and vault toilets. This is not a flat trail – be aware that there are many hills.
There are various places that the trail ceases to exist and you walk or ride along the street. Depending on the level of traffic, this can be nerve-wracking. But, for the most part, the trail follows the Spokane River. Don’t miss the waterfall at Mirabeau Park, mile 10.5. Shortly after the Harvard Trailhead, mile 4, the trail is squeezed between the Spokane River and I-90. The road noise is very loud until state line.
If you continue into Idaho, the trail goes for another 6.5 miles. It departs from the river and follows I-90 before reaching Post Falls, Idaho, with a detour through town. Then up and down some hills next to I-90 before reaching Coeur d’Alene. Some parts of the trail are along the Spokane River or Lake Coeur d’Alene. However, it is often a very wide bike lane along a road. The very end at Higgins Point is beautiful and a restful spot.
