Trip Report

Ruby Mountain — Saturday, Jun. 4, 2022

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Amazing day on Ruby! We started a little after 8 from Happy Creek (winter route). The forest trail was pretty easy to follow for the most part (using a GPX track), although route finding did slow us down some. Once we hit snow, we were pleasantly surprised by the good conditions! We were able to boot up the whole way with very minimal post holing. We brought crampons and snow shoes but we didn’t end up pulling either out. Footprints helped as we got closer to the top. We summited around 1:50 and hung out for a while. On the way down we saw some pinwheels, but nothing too concerning. By far the most treacherous part was walking over running water, which we had to do near the snow line. The snow is very thin in some places, and we did poke though a couple of times on the way down. Made it back to the car by 5:30! We were shocked we didn’t see a single other person out there until we ran into a couple on the happy creek trail at the very end.

It was a little hard to find real estate in the summit register, so if you are thinking of going, you might consider bringing a small notebook to leave up there!
