Trip Report

Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve — Sunday, May. 8, 2022

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Wild Bleeding Hearts large and small abounded.

If it were not for geocaching, we would have had no idea that this wonderful trail and the beach existed.

The mature forest has a grand array of trees and logs,  some with shapes we had never seen before.  The interpretive signs are excellent.   The trail and its 20 bridges are truly excellent through the forest/wetlands.

The trail to the beach is steepish but not  bad because of switchbacks,  and the excellent trail building.   The steps are steep, yes, but done easily.    I needed some assistance to get from the last step to the beach - some of the steps are missing, or were not repaired after an huge storm years ago,

We did not see any birds or wildlife, but heard hawks or eagles. Thanks to other hikers, we did see swarms of bees hanging from a tree.

The wildflowers abounded.  We had never before seen such massive amounts of Wild Bleeding Hearts. There were also a lot of Buttercups in some areas, such as the trail to the beach. We also found what we believe are Fringe Cups, False Solomon's Seal, and Herb Robert.

There were plenty of other hikers on this beautiful day, but the whole experience was still serene.

The beach, at least the short section we visited, was definitely rocky.

We didn't find any tide pools I suspect, because the tide was so far out.None the less, I found some interesting tidal zone life.

This interestingly shaped tree was at the top of the trail to/from the beach
This colony is an indication of how high up on the rocks the tide must go.
Reflections in the water, seen from one of the 20 bridges.
