Trip Report

Edfro Creek Preserve — Saturday, Apr. 23, 2022

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

This is a gem of an area, but some sections of the trail are still too muddy to be able to recommend the full hike this early in the year. We were there, so we always tried to go through the mud, rather than around and kill the young plants growing at the side.

As another trip reporter mentioned, it's still very wet and we were walking through creek water here and there. To cross the river requires finding a well placed fallen tree.

The signs, sights and sounds of wildlife were incredibly wonderful, our favorite part of the experience -- no doubt in part due to how few people were there. Elk, white butterflies, frogs, barred owl, raven and other birds and insects. Along with the salmonberry, old growth cedar, fragrant cottonwood, birch, mosses, lichens and ferns, they made this place feel like coming home.

Plenty of stinging nettle, so be careful off trail. Nice to see that someone(s) had been carefully harvesting it in spots.

Many thanks to the Lummi Nation, Whatcom Land Trust, Washington Conservation Corp and Backcountry Horsemen for restoring and protecting this important habitat.
