The trail is in good condition—a little mud in some places due to recent weather. One of my kiddos was wearing tennis shoes and only had a couple of issues on the way down from the upper falls lookout. A beautiful day with some sun breaks.
We had the trail primarily to ourselves due to arriving in the evening (5ish). We were able to get to the upper falls lookout and back before closing. We took the improved road up most of the way (Wallace Lake route ~3.6 miles) and then broke off to the right. This adds about a mile to the trek if your plan is to see the falls. The Railroad cutoff route is faster and shorter (~2.6 miles) and we took this on the way down.
The only issue was at the mid-falls lookout where there was a tech worker who was talking on her phone incessantly while her boyfriend just stood by and got into most of my pictures. If work won't leave you alone on a Friday night or you need to talk to your mother, perhaps it's time to get a new job, go hiking another day, or learn some trail etiquette.
I suggest going when there are no large crowds: early morning, evening, weekdays, or when it is raining as most fair-weathered suburbanites will not come out when the weather is bad. Also going to the upper falls does require a little bit of effort. If you are in decent shape you should be fine or you'll just need to take your time.

Washington is being overrun by tech working urbanites. I just wish they’d stick to popular trails like this one, but they’re finding our other ones too. Yaay.
