Trip Report

Cathedral Falls — Monday, Mar. 7, 2022

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens
One of the larger log "obstacles".

CAUTION: The trail to Cathedral Falls has some significant logfall obstacles requiring some comfortableness to crawl over, under, or navigate around.  Good news:  WTA, BCHW, and other trail groups have a trailparty scheduled for Apr 1-3, 2022 to mitigate the log hazards.  Subsequent WTA trailparties will repair the rootball holes and slides that have damaged the trail later in the spring.

Normally, this is a beautiful, forested hike along Goat Creek.  About 1 mile in, you reach Cathedral Falls, cascading 100 ft off the vertical cliff face. The best, however, is the huge cavern area behind the falls reminiscent of the large cathedrals nature has formed in other areas.  The walk behind the falls is awesome! There are a few stream crossings east of the falls but easily crossed with minimal water issues.

Directions:  Taidnapam Park is about 110 miles south of Tacoma in Lewis County, near the town of Morton. From Tacoma, take I-5 south to Highway 12 East (Exit 68). Drive east on Highway 12 for approximately 37 miles (5 miles past Morton). Turn right on Kosmos Road, then left onto Champion Haul Road. Drive approximately four miles to the park. Continue past the Park, cross the bridge and make an immediate right on FS27.  Then 0.8 mi to a left on FS2750.  Trailhead is another 3.6 mi with a few potholes but easily negotiated with a 2wd vehicle.

On weekends, get to the trailhead early as this has become a very popular waterfall hike.
