Trip Report

Winchester Mountain — Friday, Oct. 1, 2021

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

Fall colors are out! We started out on fri early. Sun was out with intermittent clouds. Accidently ended up dropping ph in pit toilet. Yuck! Thankfully had plastic bag in car to wrap over hand before reaching far in and barely able to grab ph (barely). Nearly killed my ph by the excess baby wipes and hand sanitizer on it afterwards. After recovering from this incident, packed up and headed up the trail. Parking lot was quite full for a fri morning, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised because of the weather. I've done this hike before around the same time last yr and had total fog and snow. Luckily, this year had better weather!

Very treacherous rd to get to trailhead. Don't EVER attempt to drive up to this if you have a compact car. You need a car with high clearance to make it safely. Huge ruts, washouts and narrow road with shear drop off that you would slid off the rd to your death. It is very difficult to pass and at times, one of you will have to backup a long ways until the rd becomes wide enough to squeeze past each other. Trail is easy to follow and well maintained. Lots of ripe blueberries along trail. Gorgeous views all the way up and at the top. Unobstructed view of mt baker. No toilet facilities at top. Blue bags provided in lookout for pooping into and hauling out yourself to dispose into a proper receptacle. Though, I myself would rather hike down to the trailhead and use the pit toilet if staying up on the peak. Stayed in lookout, had a few neighbors that decided to pitch tents nearby. Was very cold and windy all afternoon/evening/night and into next day. Clear skies to see peaks though despite clouds on sat. Very busy with hikers on both fri and sat.
