Today I hiked the Hannegan Pass Trail and climbed up on the "Arm" of Ruth Mountain. My high point was near the glacier. The arm makes for a spectacular day hike but the gully one must climb (straight up) to reach the climber's trail leading to the arm is terrible. Tree belays up and down, bring gloves if you're determined to reach the arm. From Hannegan Pass take either of the two way trails in a southerly direction over a small hill and either of these will lead you to the gully and the route up to the arm. The gully part was about 125 yards. (Estimate)
The views were spectacular highlighted by Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Baker to the southwest. North Cascade Peaks including Mt. Spickard and Mox Peak, where Fred Becky made the first ascents long ago, can be seen to the northeast. (see photos below)
The bugs which have such a horrible reputation for this trail seem to be gone and I did not notice much haze at all today.
I estimate this hike was about 10 miles round trip.
