This is a good hike to avoid the crowds at the end of the road trails. We were the only ones on the trail all day, on a Wednesday. The road to the trailhead is ok, but it is washboard almost all the way. Drive slowly. The trail is slightly overgrown in a few places, but it's easy to brush past. Unlike many creek hikes, you actually do walk next to a creek for a large part of this trail. Be aware that almost all the elevation gain is in the last third of the trail. It is steep. This steep section is mostly covered with small loose rocks, so walk carefully on the way down. We slipped a few times. No bugs except a couple of flies (non-biting kind) at the summit. The views from the summit are awesome. Beautiful scenery in all directions.
Trying something new, I added a photo (at least I hope I did). We saw an interesting snake on the trail. About 2 feet long. It was so sluggish - apparently warming up in the sun - that it didn't move when we stepped over it. Does anybody know the name of it?

Could it be a northern rubber boa? I have a fear of snakes so I can barely look at your photo. I'm trying to desensitize myself to the fear I have of them. Hence, I'm taking a gander at its identification. Thanks for your report.

I think Lucy is right, looks like a rubber boa to me. You're very lucky to see one -- they're pretty elusive.

It's a rubber boa. I saw one when I was coming back from Navaho Pass visiting the Three Brothers a few months ago.
They're pretty awesome :).
