As previous trip reports note, there is an active bear in the area. Not surprising, given the abundance of berries at the moment!
We camped near the river, approximately three miles in from the Middle Fork trailhead. In the morning, we saw the bear traversing the hillside across from our camp. It saw us and went the other way --- off to eat berries somewhere else.
Notes on the trail:
- There is one steep downhill slope with loose gravel, probably within the first mile. If you are carrying a heavy pack (or a child, in my case), tread carefully.
- The trail gets significantly brushier after three miles. We went down to see the big tree, and the salmon berries have almost overtaken the trail at certain places.
This is a great easy backpack close to the city. Cache your food well and have fun! My one-year-old loved splashing in the river and snacking on wild blueberries. And trying to eat all the pinecones.

Was it a brownish/black, young looking bear?
