We had been camping in the area and decided to try out the Crofton Ridge East Trail #73 while in the area. The trailhead has parking for a number of cars and a well-kept vault toilet. We were the only ones hiking on this beautiful Father's Day. The trail immediately crosses over Morrison Creek and heads into the charred forest, which last burned in the Cascade Creek Fire 2012. Lots of bear grass was on full display and great views of Mt Adams. After crossing over Crofton Creek the trail climbs steeply until reaching the saddle. At this point we decided to head off trail to find Crofton Butte. No trail is visible here but the cross country is fairly straightforward though it does require climbing over a number of burnt trees. The giant boulder atop Crofton Butte can be reached after about a third of a mile. The old volcanic plug is easy to scramble up from the NW side. The views from the top make this a great hike and one that you will more than likely have all to yourself.
