Got to the trailhead at a leisurely 7:30 this morning, and there were 3 other groups about to set out. Trail is in pretty good shape, but has several blowdowns. The majority are easy to step over; but one has a tunnel going through its many branches. At mile 3, there is a very large tree down across the trail - you have to walk the log down, then awkwardly shimmy over another medium log. We hit snow at 3.5 miles (4,200 ft), and the trail is covered the rest of the way. There is a lot of running water in the meadow, and lots of snow bridges.
We took the trail up to Trappers Peak at the split. The scramble up is completely snow free. After that, there are several giant cornices so don’t get too close to the edge! There are several sections that I was extremely happy to have an ice axe, but a couple of trail runners made it up without one, so it is possible. The snow was super soft, so spikes weren’t needed. There are a few rocks up at the top that are melted out. After enjoying a long lunch at the top, we headed back down with our new friend, Mark.
On our way back down the road, we saw a momma bear with two tiny cubs! It was the icing on a wonderful day in the mountains. Total mileage was 9.67 miles with 3,400ft gain. Will try to post some pics later.
Oh, and if you dropped a Yellowstone bottle, let me know and I’ll mail it back to you.

I'm thinking of going up this weekend assuming the lake is thawed out and do some fishing

The lake is beginning to thaw, but still has a frozen layer on top.
