Hurricane Hill — Saturday, Jun. 5, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast

Traffic was very minor, got to the trailhead at about 9 or 9:30 am, plenty of parking at this time. It was a cloudy day, which kind of made it feel like hiking through a video game level that hadn't been completed because the clouds reduced visibility distance. Still pretty cool.

The trail that's open is paved, the offshoots that are in the dirt have little markers stating they're closed (remember kids, trails usually get closed because of instability or danger, not because someone is hiding the fun parts from you).

There are still patches of snow on the trail. Most of them are short and there are some well-stomped boot paths you can follow. I didn't finish the last half-mile to the top because there was more snow than I was comfortable trying to cross and it started snowing as a bonus challenge. It's probably fine for most people, especially with a trekking pole and good traction boots. Most of the other hikers this morning didn't seem daunted, I just have a history with snow and ice rife with animosity, so I try not to press my luck. ;)

This trail would be an awesome intro hike for somebody. Elevation gain gets your heart pumping and your calves burning, but since it's paved it's nice and steady so you're only tackling the height and not also trying to find footing. The views are astounding, too, even from the start. If you want to get someone hooked on hiking, try this one on for size.
