North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

We got to the TH at 8am to find plenty of parking. The road to the TH was fine with some ice, but easy to drive on in a Prius.

The trail itself was SUPER icy through the lowland forest. The bridges were especially icy and were the worst thing to cross during the entire hike.

The fallen tree a mile or two in did create a difficult washout to get around. The wall we had to climb was icy when we got to it, so we were slipping and the rope we were using wasn't log enough to reach until you were halfway up. Coming back down it was just super muddy but manageable.

When you got to the rock field, the trail became compact snow that was easier to go up.

On the way down around noon, the snow was more slushy and a slippery. The ice in the forest was gone though.

I did the hike in microspikes with trekking poles, and didn't have issue.

The views were gorgeous. Love this hike this time of the year. :)

Could you expand on the wall and the rope?? Was this something you brought, or something that someone else had placed?

There is a fallen over tree blocking the trail. You have to scale up the mountain there by climbing/using a rope to get up. There were 2 ropes there. A purple one that wasn't long enough and a yellow one.
We didn't see the yellow one so we used the shorter purple one.

Is there any way to get a dog around the tree blocking the trail? Or will I be forced to turn around at that point if I have a dog. We have a golden retriever we like to hike with but thinking this obstacle might rule this hike out for a bit.
