Ancient trees in an old growth forest, wild wilderness, the beautiful blue Boulder river, birds, and waterfalls, this hike is a sure delight.
The turn off (French creek road) from State route 530 to the trailhead is a short 4 miles. There are many potholes that are unavoidable so we drove it with extra caution. There is a toilet located a mile or so before you reach the trailhead parking area and at the trailhead there is room for maybe 15 vehicles to park.
On the trail there is relatively easy elevation gain to the first waterfall without any obstacles. Beyond the first waterfall there is some water flowing down the trail and a few fallen trees that you'll need to hop over or duck under. We were able to pass them without too much trouble. We saw over 10 Varied Thrush, a Steller's Jay, and a pair of Bald eagles perched together over the river on our drive out. Was a wonderful day for a wilderness hike!
One last friendly note encouraging others to always practice LNT principles when traveling outdoors, pack out everything you bring with you, and help preserve and protect the wild character of Washington's incredible wilderness
