Trip Report

Dugualla State Park — Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island
Opening to beach from lush forest trails
So underused and I'm so glad. Only 1 car in lot. Hiked 4pm-7:15pm and covered 5.8 miles (able to hike beach ~0.2 mile). Map and signage excellent. Big trees, incredible bird life, pristine/wild beach. Heavy rain last night so no dust yet no mud. Don't let "Wetland Trail" dissuade you--no wet, no bugs. If one can ignore the 7-8 noisy fly-overs in a 3hr period then easily this park is four stars. Interesting discoveries: a pair of loquacious bald eagles along beach, huge heron, unidentifiable orange & yellow birds, trees on "Wetland Trail" that cry&squeal&moan, Mike aka mike-o-logical out with his toddlers looking for fungi, only 3 hikers seen in 3 hours, and a large bird carcass in grass at edge of parking lot (heron or eagle).
Large old trees growing at water's edge and big birds love to hang out here
Delightful orange birds that I can't ID
Very talkative bald eagle; mate nearby; looked for a nest but no can see
