Trip Report

Moose Creek Trail 421 - Nez Perce National Forest — Thursday, Jun. 25, 2020

Lots of down trees.

Intense hike starting at the Moose Creek Ranger Station Smokejumper Airfield in the New Perce National Forest. (Yes, you have to fly in, or hike 23 miles from the end of the drivable road). We hiked about 14 miles total going out and back to some fantastic fly fishing up towards the head waters of Moose Creek in Idaho. The trail was an absolute obstacle course of down trees and over grown bushes but sooo much worth the effort. If you can possibly get there, it's worth the effort. Interesting history - stumbled across what appeared to be bottom of one of those old moonshiners porcelain whiskey containers, the cast iron door to an old wood stove, and the 125 year old grave of Eddie Wheeler from Connecticut. The water was ice cold but refreshing for the hike back to the airfield where we camped. Coincidentally, when we arrived back at the Ranger Station that was closed due to Covid, the mule pack train with supplies and the summer Ranger was just arriving and the trail crew was going to begin working on clearing the trail the next day. #wonderful-timing

More down trees.
Perspective - nature has almost completely reclaimed an old mining area.
Cold water.
