Capitol State Forest Fuzzy Top — Thursday, Jun. 11, 2020

Olympic Peninsula > Olympia

As one of the few trails in the Capitol Forest designated for hikers only, I’ve been curious about this short trail for a while. Today I decided to make the drive and check it out. Bottom line; don’t bother unless you’re there anyway for some reason. I try not to be a Capitol Forest hater, in spite of the shooting and motor bikes and garbage dumping, but I just didn’t see the point of this trail.

Its a pretty enough walk through the woods, occasional view points show the patchwork of clear cuts in various stages of regrowth and the surrounding towns. From the trailhead to the “summit” was a 15 minute walk, not steep, starting to suffer from encroachment by the understory plants. I live about 15 minutes from the Forest, driving to the D line and up from the Oakville side took an hour and five minutes, coming back via the C line was about 45 minutes. So I burned fossil fuel for almost two hours to walk 30 minutes, bad on me! I won’t do it again. There also seems to be more random shooting going on than I’ve heard over the last couple of years, not sure why.

Ive enjoyed some quiet and pleasant walks through Capitol Forest over the last few years, especially around the Lost Valley Loop and the Margaret McKinney, but I think I’ll leave it to the shooters and dirt bikers for the summer.

Olywa on Capitol State Forest Fuzzy Top

Shooting is in gravel pit well to north, a road junction or two away.

Direction of fire is away from Fuzzy Top. Acoustics do seem to produce a strong echo towards F.T.
