Trip Report

Merrill Lake Conservation Area - Kalama River Falls — Saturday, May. 9, 2020

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens

Arrived at TH at 1:12pm, and there were five cars. 81*F. We took the last feasible parking spot. We came across all five parties on the trail, but plenty of space for social distancing. All five were also courteous hikers. Back to car by 3:47pm, which included time to play in the water and explore the forest.

An early-season hike with partner and two kids (10 & 12) to test out the legs after winter and a knee injury. This was a perfect spot. Quiet, warm day, with the mixed fragrance of pine and fir made for a magical afternoon. We were treated to strawberry blossoms and early season flowers, giant old-growth fir trees that look like ancient sentries, and a roaring waterfall with a safe area for a cold plunge. Be warned, the water is very cold due to the snow melt, but even my children enjoyed the invigorating rush.

A few parts of the trail heading down to the falls have low-hanging branches and a bit of trail overgrowth, but nothing long pants and gentle parting can’t overcome. One section is very steep and someone has tied a rope to assist the climb down and up. We loved this and the kids went up and down several times for fun. All in all, a wonderful way to spend the day, and we will return to further explore other trails that continue past the falls.
