Trip Report

Barnum Point — Saturday, May. 9, 2020

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island

Hiking with Covid restrictions is better than no hiking at all! It felt really good to get some fresh air today. I appreciate the WTA website for help finding an open trail.
This was a good choice for social distancing. The lot is restricted to 15 cars and there’s plenty of room to spread out with wide trails and plenty of open space on the beach and around the meadow.
It was an extremely low tide today. We were lucky to see 21 bald eagles hanging out at the shoreline. Fun to watch a blue heron stand it’s ground, squawking, wings flapping, to claim it’s space among the baldies.
Lots of flowers and that sweet herbal smell that comes along. We heard the most insanely loud woodpecker. Sounded like someone playing a bongo drum. Also heard the owl in the same spot I’ve heard it on multiple other trips, not far from the old parking lot.
When we got back to the lot there were 2 cars waiting for a spot. I appreciate everyone’s efforts to keep their distance with a smile and a wave.

Did you find this trip report helpful?

I went on Friday and loved it. We too saw the owl as we approach the new parking lot. Didn't get a great view of it oh, is it a great horned or barred? ^Ellen

Check out DannyG’s report from 9/15. Looks like a beautiful barred owl.
