White Pass Nordic Center — Friday, Mar. 20, 2020

South Cascades > White Pass/Cowlitz River Valley

I'm a teacher with an empty classroom, trying to figure out "remote teaching." I unplugged this morning, and my friend and I headed up to White Pass. I don't usually snowshoe the official Nordic trails (I'm not willing to pay the $$$), but since White Pass is closed, the trails are free (my interpretation of the website notice).

We started at the yurt, snowshoed to the waterfall above Dog Lake, then circled up and around back to the yurt. Total of 4.9 miles, 540ft elevation change. Started at 8:30am, took a break at the falls, then back to the car around 11:30am.

It was a perfect day - sunny, blue sky, temperature in the 30s. I started in fleece, wore short sleeves the last half.

In case you are interested, here is our route - find a good map of the trails here - https://d2iw90bb10toin.cloudfront.net/FILES-FOR-DOWNLOAD/Nordic-Map.pdf - Yurt --> Snowshoe Trail (south side of Leech Lake) --> Corral Loop --> Deer Creek Loop --> Dog Lake Loop --> Snowshoe Trail --> FALLS (break time) --> shortcut north through the woods (no trail) to Zig Zag Loop --> Dark Meadows Loop --> Kendall Konnector --> Lake Loop --> Yurt.

A great chance to explore the Nordic trails, so get up there if you can. We saw one other person (and his dog) on the trails, so plenty of social distance for everyone. I am ready to get back to finding ways to teach and connect to my students!

PCT to Deer Lake and beyond is pretty well pounded down if one was inclined to add that as part of a trek incorporating the Nordic Area.
