Trip Report

Steptoe Butte State Park Heritage Site — Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020

Eastern Washington > Palouse and Blue Mountains
Steptoe Butte

Everybody knows Steptoe Butte as a drive-up but in winter when the summit road is not plowed, it makes for a good snowshoe and cross country ski destination. The entry road is normally plowed to the picnic area but presently it is gated at the highway entrance which makes for a 6.4 mile RT to the summit with about 1,100' of gain. When the road is open to the picnic area take a couple miles off that figure.

The grade is easy enough for beginning skiers and was packed down by snowmobiles during my trip.

Weather began to move in as I made it to the summit so I did not linger long as winds can become fierce up there.
