My wife and I headed east to see fall colors. Rainy Lake was beautiful, Washington Pass Overlook was awesome, and the Beaver Pond on Patterson Mountain was stunning just before sunrise. The colors along the highway were brilliant, and the larch in the mountain were golden. We stayed overnight in a quaint riverside hotel in Winthrop and enjoyed a great dinner at Carlos' 1800 Mexican restaurant. A very nice outing in a gorgeous area.

Beware of: trail conditions

Part of the old trail over Washington Pass before the highway. Surprisingly no reports here yet. It's in Fred T. Darvill's "North Cascades Highway Guide" from 1973 and also on the National Geographic USGS discs.

Park outside the gate across the Washington Pass overlook road. Walk .2 mile toward the overlook and look for trail on left near culvert. Loop through the trees to the north side of the meadow where the trail becomes more distinct.

This trail was once well used judging by the deep trough in some places. The trail skirts the north side of the meadow just in the trees heading west parallel the highway. Beautiful views of surrounding peaks from here- Liberty Bell is particularly impressive. Many small creeks cross the trail through this area.

I went about 4 miles total including wanderings so probably 1.5 miles each way of trail. Combine this one with a walk to the overlook [the gate is almost always locked]. This is in the North Cascades Highway Scenic Area so not affected by the shutdown.

After hiking Blue Lake earlier that day, I stopped at the Washington Pass Overlook on my way back to Winthrop. For no real reason I always passed this Outlook any time I drove along SR20 around here. The Outlook area is well maintained, and appears it was in the first place planned as a rest stop with maybe a little restaurant and/or souvenir shop. Nothing of that (building) is in use at all. The way to the actual Outlook is paved and from there one has an excellent view down to the famous hairpin curve and Liberty Bell Mountain. It is a short loop of maybe 0.1 miles. And while taking pictures all of a sudden I thought: 'Wait, I have seen this before!' So I looked at my old and still used AAA Atlas from 1996, which I purchased back in 1998 at some gas station in NJ and the first day I came to the US at all for a business trip. And WOW, the cover picture of it is exactly the same as I just took. Awesome. And what a way to end day 8, the last day, of my 2013 hiking vacation around Winthrop and the Methow valley.

Passed by this overlook sometime after 5pm. The road to the overlook was gated. This added half a mile each way, but the views were worth it!

Short little 4 mile round trip to start off the morning. This is a well used horse trail. It is very gentle, broad, and open. Beautiful trees and ground cover. The trailhead is well signed, has a large parking lot and a smelly outhouse. At 1.7 miles is the junction to Cutthroat Pass. We decided just to go to the lake. The path to the lake ambles over a stream and through woods to a bright green basin, broad and shallow, at the base of the mountains. The water level is low right now so the wide shoreline is mucky but is is still very pretty and there are campsites back in the trees. By all means, do not miss the Washington Pass overlook! In the morning light the sun really highlights the stunning Liberty Bell peaks.
