Slide Lake #635 — Jun. 19, 2004

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

Road 16 is in good shape to the trailhead, albeit a long ways on a gravel road. There is some logging going on at a critical junction, so don't do what we did, and miss the left turn! The trail needs some work. There are several logs down and some broken branches in another couple sections. None are particularly troublesome on this very short trail. The fisherman's path to Enjar Lake is easy to lose on the way up. Easier to follow on the return path. Expect lots of brush. While in the neighborhood, we climbed nearly to the summit Tommy Thompson, but chickened out on the summit block. Buck! Buck!

Today (Tuesday) my cousin and I went into Slide lake. The road (Illabut) is clear (snow) all the way to the trail head. There are *numerous* blow downs on the road that you must drive around. The lake is snow free. It took some 30 minutes to get into Slide. We hiked along the northern shore two miles past the lake to the junction that leads to Enjar and Arrowhead lakes. It was obvious that Enjar is still snowed in pretty tight. TB

My son and I spent the night at Slide lake. Weather was warm and bugs were refreshly absent. We could hear the thunderstorm in the Skagit valley. Seattle was getting lots of rain and we were dry. This was a rare oddity. The lake is down drastically from high water mark. Fishing was good - remember to catch and release so all can enjoy. There was one party at the lake firing a gun. This is a touch disconcerning when you are standing on the shore of the lake. I am trying to instill outdoor ethics in my son by hauling out trash left by others. This could be a full time job at this lake. We filled up half a pack and did not make a dent. What depresses me in particular are the birdsnests of monifilament line along side the lake. These are simply animals traps waiting to kill. Hike clean.

Pretty nice day for a hike! Not too hot, not too cool...just right! I took my Daughter and one of my buddies up to the lake for a afternoon of fishing and fun. Trail's in good shape...for as many people that use this one; but it's a easy hike and a nice finish so that explains it. Just don't leave any valuables in your car where their visible. My truck was broken into and them FN *&^%$#@! took a whole bunch of stuff...we figure we lost over $300.00 bucks worth. If you can't take it with 'ya...don't bring it; and if you pack it in...pack it out. Take Care out there and be safe!

This is where I started so I thought I should go back to where it all began. I could have picked a better day to go but once my mind is made up, I usually don't change it. The trail is in good shape except for a few muddy places. Don't miss the twin firs growing together over a huge boulder. I call them the King and Queen. Lake is just as beautiful as it was five years ago. My only regret was to see that someone left their cheap plastic tarp, cooking pot, and tin cans in my favorite campsite. That really gets me mad! If your're going to go into the mountains, you don't leave your #@^+ for someone else to pack out. RIGHT' This tainted the whole experience and the pair of shoes and sweater that I found later at the trailhead didn't make me feel any better.
