It's a short and well kept trail that opens up to the sea. At the very end we got to sit down and listen to the ocean, and the colony of seals right there. The kelp is impressive too.

These trails are on different parts of Lopez Island and we hiked/walked them on different days but they're all so short I thought I'd combine them into one report.

Shark Reef- Went on a windy day. The currents had white caps and it was impressive to sit in the bluff contemplating the power of water. Thank you for the new boardwalks and clean outhouses.

Spencer Spit- A bit less windy when we got to Spencer Spit. Pretty rocks for beachcombers and plenty of flat ones for skipping on the water. 5 great blue herons in the marsh.

Iceberg Point- I recommend parking at Agate Beach. They have the best kept outhouse on the island and there are no facilities once you hit the trail. I really love this part of the island. Take a closer look at the dried grass and you'll see pretty dried flowers. We saw a family of 5 sea otters swimming along the shore. So cute, the way they stick their heads up to look around. Using my new birthday binoculars, I could see a mother seal use her flipper to help her baby up onto the rock, then watched the baby nursing. For a minute there, I thought I was on National Geographic. Very fun to narrarate your own nature show!

Now... off to Orcas island!

happy Hikeathon!

More of a nice stroll than a hike, this short journey through the woods and along rocky bluffs overlooking the water gives you a sampling of the PNW's best in one sweet visit. Peekaboo views of mountains, turbulent tides (and tide pools!), barking seals, interesting rock formations, trees that have survived many a harsh storm and even a lighthouse across the narrow gap between islands. This is a gem of a county park, suitable for all ages and capabilities (even met a pet pig named Kermie who was nice enough to take his parents out for a walk, lol). Easy access, good parking and privy at the trailhead. Trail a little rooty at points and rocky if you choose to get closer to the waters edge.

This is a great hike (stroll?) to some stunning views off of Lopez island. The afternoon weather cleared up from the big storm that rolled in over the weekend and provided fun opportunities to explore the rocks, crevices, polished small rocks, log walking, and seal watching for hours. We saw at least 40 seals on a large rock and it was fun to see them body wake in the surrounding strong current. This hike is great for all levels - stay up high on the bluff or for more adventure rock exploring kids. Clean privies at the trail head (don't forget to lock them when in use - sorry to the guy I walked in on - oops!)
