I rode my bike to the trailhead via the Olympic Discovery Trail. What a fantastic trail and what a fantastic way to reach a hike. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pyramid Peak trail, especially the section on the ridge that has peek-a-boo views to the north. It was supremely quiet on that section, very relaxing.
I think the slide section is about knowing yourself and your limits. I spend much of the winter skiing down double-black chutes and wasn't particularly bothered by the exposure. There were probably three steps I needed to be intentional about, one in particular where I found a hand-hold on a boulder on the inside of the path before I stepped across the gap. Trekking poles were helpful.
There was one stream running just before the slide on the ascent if you need to filter water. There's no reason to be ashamed of turning back at the slide. Even hiking to the slide for the view there is a pleasant hike. Enjoy!

Fantastic hike! Awesome view at the top. Good mix of gentle uphill grade and switchbacks. It took me 3hrs round-trip, I spent about 15min at the lookout. There were a few yellow jackets buzzing around the cabin at the top but, not that bad. There is about a 100 foot section of the trail that a landslide took out. The trail is still there. It is not very difficult to cross unless you're weak or a big scaredy-cat. The gravel was loose, the trail was only a foot wide and it's a little steep going through. There is exposed rock along this section that you can hold onto. Go slow, hold onto the rock and you'll be fine. It's only a few minutes to get past it.

Parked on the left shoulder near the handicapped reserved shoulder on Camp David Jr Road. The infamous landslide section wasn't something I researched ahead of witnessing it. From the perspective of someone who goes all out in terms of gear for hiking, (shoes, poles, chains, crampons, etc.), this section has become too dangerous over the years and it's honestly best to refrain from crossing. If you have a fear of heights, do NOT cross the washout. My personal experience of this section was very risky and again, even with the correct footing, I found myself sliding and having to panic for more rock to hold onto as the pieces I did use for leverage crumbled under my pressure. Other than the washout landslide section, the WWII Flight Security Building at the top was super cool to check out and incredibly well preserved. It's a shame that this structure is gated behind a serious risk of death. I'm incredibly grateful I made it back down from Pyramid Mountain.
Things are looking good on this payoff hike trail. Looks like since my last visit the tread across the slide has received some attention/improvement. Still not a area to cross without proper footwear, and when conditions are safe to do so. (Recommend a hiking pole here) It would be nice if folks with the urge to have lunch on the rock face at the top will duct tape their personal belongs to themselves since there seems to be a fair number of people checking to see if gravity works from these locations!
No bugs.
This trail is not one with many wildflowers but does have unique view of Lake Crescent that makes this decent cardio hike worth it.
