We stopped here for a quick hike after driving the Mountain Loop Highway from Darrington. Parking is along the highway by the brick sign. No restroom facilities here or along the trail. The trail was in really good condition all the way to the river. Footing got a little tricky farther along the river to the viewpoint. That part is along the old railroad grade whose foundation rock and timbers are the foot tread. Signs strongly advise not to go beyond the viewpoint, which made perfect sense to me. Fall colors were nice and the sound of the river was soothing.

My first time down this trail, and it’s clearly a local well kept secret. I won’t spoil it all, but I did push past the point that I was supposed to stop, and I found it rewarding.
So many berries. SO many berries. It was slow going because we had to stop constantly and shovel thimbleberries into our faces. A few mosquitoes, nothing that even required bug spray, and a few very mild patches of mud. The river was wonderful, and at the signed stopping-point by the landslide, we climbed down and soaked our feet in the cool fresh water before ascending for the rest of our visit. Beautiful. I’ll be back many more times.

After the zigzag descent to the flatter area, the trail become somewhat overgrown. I was hiking with a person who really dislikes having to brush up against plants so we turned back. But for the average person I think it’s manageable.
