Miller Peninsula-Thompson Spit — Apr. 5, 2011

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
Beware of: trail conditions

Beautiful forest walk of 4.6 miles r/t along a two rut road and then on a trail down a wooded ravine to a rocky beach facing the Straits and Protection Island. Flat road was a series of big puddles and mud. We used hiking sticks to balance ourselves to skirt around them. This area is WA State Park lands but without any facilities or sign markers. Good trail. When in doubt take the downhill fork. Trailhead is on left hand side of Diamond Pt. Road which turns off just after the Clallam Co. sign on Route 101 going West. Go up Diamond Pt. Rd to a metal gate with WA State Parks on it. Left side of road. Limited parking area. At trailhead, stay to the right of the Blasting Area sign on the private road.

Very beautiful and a great variety of scenery. From green, old growth woods, to drier brush and more beach-like conditions, back into forest. Quiet and peaceful, I out on a rocky beach. Tide too high to go the full length of the beach, I turned back to enjoy the easy climb back up and out of the woods. Never did see the second rusty gate described in the book but it was easy to find my way.

This is a 5 mile round trip hike to Thompson Spit. The trail access and description can be found in Craig Romano's book,"Dayhiking the Olympic Peninsula". The tide was high so we hiked only to the beach which is 1.75 miles. The view of Mt Baker, Mt Shuksan, and Protection Island was beautiful! Again we saw many varieties of mushrooms! There is a log to the right of the trail as you are about to get to the beach that has at least a hundred turkey feather 'shrooms! We saw only one other group of hikers, a young mom and her 2 sons. It's a great family hike esp on such a beautiful day as we had today!

We learned of this hike from Craig Romano's book, Day Hiking: Olympic Peninsula. The TH is off the Diamond Point Road which is off HWY101 about 10 miles east of Sequim. There is room for 1-2 cars beside the NTI gated road. After walking the road .2 miles turn right at a Wa State Parks signed gate. The road has large areas of standing water, but one can get around them. At 1.75 miles from the TH you reach the cobble stoned beach on The Strait of Juan de Fuca. The last .4 miles of trail was constructed by WTA and goes through a forested ravine with remains of old-growth fir and cedar and lush green undergrowth. Turn right and hike 3/4 mile to Thompson Spit. We didn't seen a lot of birds, but did see a wide variety.--1 eagle, mergansers, 1 common loon, 1 heron, Harlequin ducks, 2 geese, and 2 kingfishers fishing the small pond at the spit. We met a state park ranger on our return to the TH and he told us development of the state park was ""on hold"" as available funds are needed for the upkeep of existing parks.
