Hiking Trout Creek

Though lacking in scenic mountain viewpoints, the trail never wanders far from beautiful Trout Creek, whose rushing waters form the audio backdrop.

The trail begins at the end of Trout Creek Road and brings you to the site of the old Sunset Mine, where principally copper but a bit of silver and gold were mined. From the original concrete mill foundation to the multiple adits and stopes dotted around the area, there are lots of interesting parts to explore. Please be aware that mines can be dangerous to enter - enjoy the area around it but do not enter it.

For a longer hike, continue up the road, where you will find an old wooden bridge over Trout Creek in another half mile. The bridge is a perfect sunny spot for lunch or napping. The road continues on from here for another two miles for the more energetic.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

To get there, drive Highway 2 to eight miles east of Gold Bar and turn off at the Index-Galena Road and follow it about six miles along the North Fork Skykomish River, watching for the small sign marking the Trout Creek bridge. Just after that point, turn right up unmarked FR 6320 (it's the first turnoff after the creek). Park there unless you have a VERY high clearance vehicle - the road is not maintained and is extremely rough.

If you do park here, leave room for other vehicles to pass.
