The Gray Wolf Trail extends between Forest Road 2870 and the Main Fork Dosewallips River in the northeast corner of the Olympics. Along the way it goes up and over Gray Wolf Pass.
From Forest Road 2870, the Lower Gray Wolf River Trail extends up for 3.7 miles before turning into the Upper Gray Wolf River Trail. Continuing on it passes from the Olympic National Forest to Olympic National Park before turning left up the steeper valley of the Upper Gray Wolf River for 5.3 miles. From here the trail takes another left turn and climbs to Gray Wolf Pass in 3.8 miles.
On the other side of the pass, the trail drops steeply over the course of 3.3 switchbacking miles to the valley of the Dosewallips River, where it connects to the trail that traces along the river there.
