Road to the trailhead had some potholes but just about what I would expect for a typical forest road. We felt totally fine in our CR-V, I think any car could make it if you take it easy.

The trail was overall in really good shape - a couple of trees down but they were easy to go under or around. There is one big patch of snow left right before you reach the summit that is quite steep and doesn't have a very good runout. My boyfriend went straight up it, and I went through some bushes & a patch of trees (getting quite scratched up on the way) to avoid the very steep snow. Would probably be best to wait until it melts out unless you want to carry spikes or are very comfortable in snow.

Nice views (although Hood & Adams were behind clouds) and LOTS of wildflowers blooming, even right from the trailhead! Some paintbrush near the trailhead, many trillium in the woods, and tons of glacier lilies & phlox near the summit. Daffodils at the summit are a bit past their prime, and the big field of balsamroot just past the summit still needs a bit before it will be blooming.

We followed the trail a bit toward Big Huckleberry, but only made it about half a mile before the trail was completely covered in snow. There was one small stream about a mile from the trailhead, but otherwise the trail was dry. Overall a wonderful hike!

Backpacked up to Cold Springs Camp from Grassy Knoll trailhead 7/23-7/24. Only saw two other parties the whole trip, and neither were backpacking. This was good because Cold Springs Camp is really the only decent campsite that's near water on the trail. 2-3 tents could fit in the campsite. The spring isn't huge, but was totally adequate for drinking water. No biting bugs at camp and nice wildflowers blooming on the Knoll. Pretty steep ascent up to the Knoll, which was a good workout.

After setting up camp, we hiked up to Big Huckleberry mountain and, at the recommendation of other reviewers, 0.25 mile past the Big Huckleberry trail on the PCT to a great Adams view. We thoroughly enjoyed this, though the views are not all that different from what you see on the Knoll trail.

Road to the trailhead is passable in anything with some clearance (I had a Rav-4). I wouldn't bring a sedan up it, but you probably could if you went slow and were confident. There are a decent amount of potholes, branches sticking into the road, etc. as well as the road being narrow.

Overall, it was a great trip! Would definitely go back.

WTA (Southwest Crew) took two days to brush the corridor to the summit. A crew of 10 took on the work with power brushes, loppers, and saws to tackle 6 blow downs and heavy shrubbery overgrowing the trail.  Work on this trail occurs almost yearly and with its popularity and growth maintaining an 8' corridor is challenging.  But now it's passable from trailhead to Grassy Knoll summit for the season.  Our next project is to come in from the west and tackle the ridge leading up to the summit.  Heavy vine maple, salal, and other opportunistic shrubs are in a major growth spurt.

Beautiful find. Trail in good condition, except a few spots where the foliage has overgrown, but doable. Great views of Mt Adams and Mt Hood. Lots of wildflowers and lots and lots of butterflies. Went as far as Cold springs then turned back for a total of 7.5 mile day. Option to continue to Huckleberry Mt. to make it a 10 Mile day but since it was hot we decided to turn back. Elevation was enough to remind me to continue with cardio training. Trailhead easy to get to with gravel road in very good condition. Only a few areas with potholes.

Hiked up to Grassy Knoll this weekend for a short little jaunt to check on the wildflowers. There were a few downed trees on the trail, but nothing major. Also a number of small patches of snow, but nothing too terrible until you get to Grassy Knoll. There’s a fairly significant snow patch across the trail just below the Knoll that can be crossed safely if you have spikes, otherwise it’s pretty steep and slippery and easy to slide on—our dog had a few short slides before we decided to navigate the shrub line around the snow patch to safely get to the top of the Knoll. The daffodils are in bloom, but it’s still early for most things other than sporadic trillium and saxifrage along the way.
