From the trailhead, head southwest through open large forest. The trail borders the edge of the William O. Douglas wilderness, and soon after you leave the trailhead you'll pass a large-ish lake. Look out for bugs here in the spring. Past the lake, the trail continues on a gentle downhill trajectory before crossing the wide Bumping River.
Typically, the river has enough logs in it that you can make the crossing with dry feet, but use caution as you walk, regardless! Wood is slippery when wet and the river can run fast.
Less than a quarter-mile past the river, the trail re-joins the Bumping Lake trail for further adventures.
