Decided to hike this short trail after watching a play at the Kitsap Forest Theater (check them out - Wizard of Oz was a really great show)! We are members of the Mountaineers and really enjoyed reading about the history of the theater, the Mountaineers Players, and this large plot of land that contains Big Tree Trail.

The trail was short and it was not strenuous. It only took about twenty minutes roundtrip to complete, but was still a nice walk through old growth forest, over a stream, and to the 'big tree' which is one of the top ten biggest douglas firs in the world. It's 30ft in circumference and the trail ends at the tree. There is a sign to remain on one side of the tree, as the other side is on a creek bank and slowly eroding; made worse by people habitually stepping on the area. We kept our distance, and really enjoyed the trail.

trail was relaxing and our four year old could conquer the trial easily even with the small incline at the end.

Super green today on the path. I liked all the lichen (puns) everywhere. As you walked down the path, birds began to sing around. The path was so nicely laid out so that there were no questions on where to go. The running water near a rock bed was a pleasant spot to picnic. Near the "Big Tree" there were a bunch of hairy woodpeckers flying about and chirping in pleasure.

This is a perfect rainy day hike with kids. It's short enough to keep them entertained and long enough to get away from street noise. There were a few other hikers, but it was a mostly empty trail for us. Towards the end, there was a large tree down that required climbing. It wasn't hard for the adults, but our kids needed a hand.

Great January trail! Less than two miles roundtrip through old growth, over a creek, down a few switchbacks and finally to a huge Douglas Fir over 30ft in circumference. All maintained by the Mountaineers.
