Hiking Yacolt Burn State Forest - Bear Grass Trail

Beginning from the Larch Mountain trailhead (a parking area for three trails with two vault toilets) hikers embark on the Bear Grass Trailhead, a multipurpose hiker, biker, and horse trail maintained by Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance volunteers in cooperation with Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

The trail is tread three to four feet wide with well-constructed drain dips and banked turns. It meanders along the forest with few straightaways, and the replanted forest is about a decade into growth. There are no streams or obstacles to cross.

Near the top of the grade is Bear Grass Meadow and from that summit the choice is to reverse or link up with the Tarbell Trail nearby. The view is of the Dole valley and on a clear day three volcanoes are spotted.

Access Note: Aside from a DNR information kiosk here, there are no picnic tables, garbage containers or camping facilities. Check before visiting as the area is closed during the winter.

Getting There

Because there are three major routes to get to Hockinson we start at the one-store town of Hockinson at NE 182nd Ave and NE 159th St. It is 11 miles from here to the Bear Grass Trailhead.

Travel one mile south to NE Rawson Rd. Turn left (east) on to NE Rawson Road. Rawson Rd has many hills and curves, but this road will lead you to the Larch Mountain Trailhead and the Bear Grass Trail destination. NE Rawson Rd changes names to L1400 Rd along the way. At milepost 10 you arrive at a major 4-way crossroad with a stop sign. Proceed straight through (east).

The road changes names to L1500 Rd. This L1500 Rd is gravel and goes uphill for 1 mile to the trailhead and parking area for 10 cars. All trailheads begin here.
