My wife, son, and I hiked the short distance to Thomas Lake to introduce our son to fishing. The trail is in great shape and has signs of recent maintenance. The hike to the lake was quite pleasant on a nice August day. We arrived at the lake only to be swarmed by mosquitoes and horse flies, ouch! Caution the bugs are still very thick up there. My wife and I had 95% DEET on and the bugs were still all over us. We covered our son with REI Jungle Juice and he didn't stand a chance. We fished for about 2HRS and caught about 6 rainbow trout and 1 brook trout. By this time the bugs were harvesting our bodies so we decide to retreat to the car. Even as we hiked out these Bugs were all over us. Although that could have been due to the frequent stops we made to indulge in the wonderfully sweet Huckleberries! Yes, the berries are ripe and the bugs should be gone soon.
