The South Cascades
Leave the Norway Pass Parking Area and instead of heading into the Monument go towards Boundary Trail No.1. The trail goes over a little ridge (with great overview of parking area in the middle of the blow down) and drops into a little bowl. You wander through alternate bands of hetler skelter blow downs and tree islands of snow pack survival forest (these are great for shade in the summer). While in the bowl, sheltered from the parking area and secluded between small hills, watch for elk. Seeing a herd here where they too feel the seclusion is not unusual. When you cross over a little bridge spanning a small creek, the trail to the left forks off to Ghost Lake. Once far in the back country, now it's fairly accessable. It sits at the base of towering pumice slide cliffs. These make up nice beaches right to the waters edge in some areas. While the ends of the lake are tucked under all kinds of tree fall. All around the forest is laid down in spetacular fashion.
