Trip Report
Pyramid Mountain / Pyramid Peak — Friday, Feb. 5, 1999
Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
The trail started out in rain. The trail ended in pouring rain. However, at the top I had fantastic sun breaks while at the lookout hut on top. Snow started at the 2000 foot level sign and became about 2.5 feet deep at the top. Saw bear tracks for about 1/2 mile in snow on the trail. I thought black bears hibernated. Oh well. This trail is on the north shore of Lake Crescent which is west of Port Angeles and pleasantly rises to the old summit lookout cabin. The trail is 3.5 miles long with 2300 feet of elevation gain. Some small sections of the trail are being subjected to erosion. There are many blowdowns on the trail on the way to the summit after this very blustery winter. I counted about 15. Don't be surprised when you reach the top of the ridge from the trail--there is a logging road with a clearcut area. This is what happens when you have a section bordering the National Forest with the National Park. But then you leave the road and go back into the wonderful forest staying near the ridgeline. Pretty nice view of Mt. Stormking.
