Schaefer Lake — Saturday, May. 23, 1998

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - East
Hiked into Schaefer Lake on Saturday. There was some blow down along the trail, although nothing that couldn't be dealt with. The log jam over the Chiwawa River (near the beginning) was in good shape. The bridge over Schaefer Creek at approximately 3.5 miles is broken on one side and tipped sidways. However it is cross-able on the broken side using the intact side as a hand rail. Ran into snow a couple hundred feet below the bridge and on and off again till about 4500' and then it was solid snow all the way to the lakes. The lower lake had some water showing but no campsites visible (all snow). One campsite has melted out at the upper lake but the lake is still completely covered with snow. Left Sunday due to the weather changing and almost beat the rain back to the trail head.
