Trip Report

Franklin Falls — Sunday, May. 21, 2023

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass

We arrived to the trailhead about 10 am on an overcast Sunday morning. There were some vehicles lining the road in but plenty of parking available in the closest lot. The two bathrooms were clean but out of toilet paper; given how busy we saw them on our way out, be prepared with your own just in case. The nearby campsites were completely empty

The hike itself was beautiful, gentle uphill grades with lots of scenic stopping points. We were three adults in our 30s but we saw plenty of families with young children and dogs handling the hike with ease. Some lingering snow off the trail but nothing on the trail itself. There was one small downed tree that we needed to climb over, but I suspect it came down in the recent thunderstorms and will be cleared quickly as we passed a ranger inspecting the trail during our hike out.

The river views were spectacular, with lots of smaller falls and rapids along the way to the big waterfall. A surprising amount of trilliums and skunk cabbage in bloom along the route as well as a few massive old growth trees made for fun pictures. The steps down to the actual falls were slick and the final hundred feet are flat but curve around a tight outjet of rock to the side so watch your step. If you're worried about slipping there are still great views from the bottom of the steps as well as some large, flat ledges that would be great for a picnic.
