Damon Point — Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023

Southwest Washington > Long Beach Area

We do Damon point almost every winter and never know what we're going to get in terms of weather so definitely dress/pack for ANYTHING! It rained on and off on this day, and was slightly windy (less so than other years which was nice). The entry point at the end of the road by the port-a-potties is more of a drop off than it used to be after the King tides, but easy to just jump down. It's more convenient to walk through the edge of the RV camp and access the point that way though.

The low tide today was 3.6ft at around 1:00pm and the goal was to make it to the end of the point at low tide. We made it about 1.5 miles down the beach at low tide where there the NE and SW sides of the spit allow the water to connect. Water from the SW side waves was running over the spit to the NE side during low tide today and unfortunately I got caught in a wave which soaked my xtratuffs and almost knocked me down. I usually keep a close eye on those waves, but I was trying to cross over the "river" (for lack of a better word), so my attention was momentarily elsewhere. Learn from me and be careful at this point and definitely watch children as the waves can create a very heavy pull back to the water. We decided to turn back after a few minutes here as it was about 2pm and we didn't want to get stuck on the wrong side of the "river". It was cool watching surfers hit the 8 foot waves at this point though!
