Trip Report

Artist Point Snowshoe — Friday, Jan. 25, 2019

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

I'm a little late on submitting this as it was almost a week ago, but Erin and I headed up to Artist Point on a Friday, and it was the most magical. We are both so grateful for weekday trips to busy places on nice weather days. It was great weather in the city but as we got closer to the parking lot, it seemed to be mostly fogged in and cloudy.

Erin skinned up while I went up in my boots. I usually prefer them over snowshoes unless it's super fresh snow. Though I did posthole some, it was manageable as usual. As we approached Artist Point, the sky started to clear revealing Shuksan on our way up. I haven't seen this area in well over a year, so we were both in awe. We got up to a point where we could see both Baker and Shuksan and we enjoyed the views, clouds and the sun setting behind the mountain.

The fog was coming in and out frequently and we decided to start heading down a little before sunset. I haven't been in snow in so long that I forgot what frozen feet felt like. On our way, the sky started to light up with pink and purple colors and it was incredible. I haven't seen anything like that in so, so long. Both of us felt so privileged to be both up there together. Erin skied down by headlamp and I stumbled along to the parking.
