Eagle Lakes — Monday, Oct. 13, 2025

North Cascades > Methow/Sawtooth
View from hiking up the road

Lots of snow! Went for larches but found complete winter weather and snow conditions. I have a low clearance van and my friend and I had to park 2 miles down the road and walk up from there. It was too much snow on the road and we started slipping so turned around.

The trailhead had two trucks in it but was pretty covered with at least 6 inches of snow, if not more. There was not much of a boot path, just steps from one or two people, so it was messy and wet. We had microspikes but didn't use them since the snow was fresh and deep on trail.

Ran into two backpackers coming out on snowshoes who said they camped at the Motorcycle camp and had 14 inches of snow there. They were fine in snowshoes, we wished we had some. Made it about 3 miles on trail and decided to turn around since our feet were wet and cold. From where we parked down the road, we did 10 miles RT and did not make it near the lake or larches.

We originally planned to do Crater Lakes but that trail had no traffic yet and was completely snow covered with 8-10 inches of snow. Even the Eagle Lake trail has not had enough traffic to pack it down and the snow was very wet and slushy on our hike out. Feet were soaked by the end. Bring snowshoes or don't go.

Snow on trail about a mile into the hike (6-8 inches here it just looks wet on this tiny section)
More snow 3 miles into the trail
