Trip Report

Fort Ward Park — Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
Views from the historic building area

We started from the boat launch parking area, where there was ample parking, the boat launch, beach access with some lovely shaded drift trees for eating lunch, and a clean/stocked vault toilet. From this parking area you have the option of heading up hill to the forest loop or straight down a wide paved path (road?) which will meet up with the upper loop trail again at the far end by battery Vinton.

We opted for the flat path, past historic fort buildings, a cascade marine trail camp area (complete with water fountain and another clean/stocked vault toilet), and battery Vinton. A long the way we had views of the water, the Bremerton ferries, and a flock of comorants. The path was flanked with lots of ripe blackberries but watch out - there was also poison oak in spots.

I am hiking all this month to raise funds and awareness for WTA so that the trails can be enjoyed by future generations. If you would like to contribute, any amount helps.
