Trip Report

Deer and Sand Lake — Thursday, Jul. 24, 2025

South Cascades > White Pass/Cowlitz River Valley
Deer Lake PCT
First hike into the high country this season, Thursday, July 24th. Up on the PCT from White Pass to Deer Lake about 4.5 miles ROUND TRIP.
Weather was cool and a nice breez but mosquitoes were baaad. White pass in July is not the best time to enjoy the mts.
I was a little stiff from not hiking for a while, but Sunnny and I trekked up the rocky steep trail - about 700 ft. elevation gain like mountain goats- that is "older mountain goats".
I'm 75 now and still keeping my boots ready to go. In August we are planing a hike from Government Meadows on the PCT up to Louisiana Saddle, a 10 mile trek. I have been working on my pack and have my base weight (without food and water) down to 11 pounds.....
