I’m sure you all have read many trip reports about the road. It’s fine to drive with high clearance vehicles but I would not do if ice/snow. There is parking at the base but, although short, it would be a steep road to snowshoe. So just be prepared for a tough one if that’s your plan.
This time of year is beautiful. No snakes. Good outhouse. Stove worked great. Didn’t use heat. Glad we had extra lanterns as the solar power died before we went to sleep.
Only saw 3 people walking/running up the road. Leavenworth is a solid hour drive away. No amenities within at least 20 miles.
Entiat river road is really close with great trails. We hiked part of the Mad River trail & dipped our legs in the cold water.
We also drove up to Sugarloaf LO which could be reached easier from the Chumstick Hwy but we only exited this way. Tyee LO is also on the same road as well as many other hikes and I believe 4 campgrounds along with some dispersed spots.
At Steliko the Steliko ridge trail starts at the outhouse and goes for miles. Beautiful evening walk.
Don’t forget this is very exposed and it was quite windy making it too cold to sit outside. But on a nice day there is a picnic table.
For those going soon there was a report of broken chairs. Currently only 2 good ones there plus one strung together(pic added). We took a very broken 4th someone left to toss. Also, a couple loose boards on the deck. I’ll report this but thought I’d mention here too!
