Trip Report

Anderson and Watson Lakes — Sunday, Sep. 8, 2024

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Approaching lower Watson Lake

We arrived at the trailhead just before 8 AM on a Sunday morning.  There were still several parking spots available but the lot must have been full on Saturday as there were a few cars lining the road just before the parking lot.

The trail was moderately busy as we started passing people coming back from their overnight trips.  It is bear hunting season and we heard reports of at least one group that got a bear.  A few other hunters were still up at the lakes.

Several reports mentioned hornets along the way so we were cautious coming across the hornet locations from previous posts.  To our relief, we didn't come across any aggressive hornets the entire trip.  We had checked with a few other hikers and the hornets didn't seem to be bothering anyone.

The weekend campers were just packing up as we arrived at Upper Watson Lake.  Several nice camp sites line the west end of the lake.  By late afternoon we had most of the lake to ourselves with just one other group camping and a small group of hunters going around the lake.

The blueberries by the lake are large, sweet, and abundant!  We wished we had brought pancake mix for blueberry pancakes.  It won't be long before this area is ablaze in fall colors as the berry bushes are just starting to turn red.

On the way out we passed a few day hikers, but the trail wasn't too busy.  Unfortunately, Mount Baker was hiding in the clouds most of weekend so will definitely need to come back later.
